MRS. GRUNDY’S ORIGIN STORY

SHE WAS NEVER SEEN. NEVER HEARD. UNTIL NOW.

They say the past is a foreign country. Mrs. Grundy would admit to dual citizenship if she was not afraid of being deported. For she does exist in past and present.

Mrs. Grundy debuted in 1800 – the phantom matriarch in the Thomas Morton play, Speed the Plough. Although never seen nor heard onstage, the players wanted to know:

“What will Mrs. Grundy say?

What will Mrs. Grundy think?

Thusly, Mrs. Grundy was established as a timeless arbiter of propriety, the very touchstone of social approval and disapproval. But, then, scoundrels quickly usurped her authority and good name. They fabricated her opinions, rendering her a notorious prude, scold and killjoy.

For more than 300 years, Mrs. Grundy endured the Reign of Ridicule in silence. She faded into history, and suffered the further insult of being called passé. Harumph.

It all ends now. At last, the world will know: What Mrs. Grundy Thinks. Indeed.
